Jungle GymA raw form amongst mature trees
Jungle Gym is set in the mature landscape garden of our Dawn Beach villa refurbishment project. The structure is set amongst the existing trees, with three sides of the facades in full height glazing including frameless corner windows, which give the experience of exercising in the garden.
Set out in a rigid grid plan, the rear wall of the space contains ancillary rooms; shower, bathroom and a storage room. This solid back wall is mirrored at full height, reflecting the image of the garden and further visually opening up the main gym space to the outside.
The material palette was kept minimal to enable a sculptural presence in the garden, with robust boardmarked concrete used both internally and externally. The strong timber graining was amplified by jet-washing the boards of the soft material in order to enhance the grain, creating a canvas where intriguing shadows are cast against the exterior facades, acting to dissolve this simple structure into the landscape.
The flat roof of the gym was used for a full photovoltaic panel array, to reduce the energy consumption of the gym to a minimum.
