A full renovation and lantern-like extension transform a dated Georgian villa into an open, light-filled home. Located within a designated conservation area in North London, the existing house was a cloistered warren of rooms, with the kitchen and main living spaces confined to the dark lower level.

The renovation relocates the kitchen to the upper ground floor alongside the period dining and living rooms, with the extension flooding the space with light. A new timber-and-glass extension spans the lower and upper ground levels, and a new stone and cast-iron staircase connects the upper ground level to the rear garden.

At the interior, the extension is uncompromisingly contemporary, while at the exterior it is respectful of the proportions and grandeur of the existing period house and its neighbours.Deep-angled privacy fins along the western elevation direct views away from neighbouring homes.

A lantern in the landscape, at once uncompromisingly contemporary and historically reverent
