AeolianThree homes sculpted by the wind
Leeward Channel, despite its name, is located on the windward side of Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands. With this in mind, we used the movement of the wind as a form-generative idea. In a similar way to the dunes that have formed on the beach, the house responds to the sweeping easterly winds of the channel, sculpting curved terraces and shifting mono-pitch roofs. These roof forms appear to arise from the action of the wind - a process known as Aeolian.
Aeolian is a 9-bed private beachside residence which puts communing and quality-time spent together at the centre of our client’s brief. For a large four-generation family, this ‘legacy’ home offers a retreat where everyone at any age can gather and move freely in one place.

A dense brief posed the challenge of spatial arrangement: fitting everything in, whilst maintaining separation, privacy and spatial quality. Our response to this lies in a splayed ‘X’-shaped plan. This divides the building into two wings, whilst creating a pair of outdoor courtyards in between that offer functional space for some of the amenities outlined in the brief, and allowing light and easterly breezes to flood into the depths of the plan.
A lazy river meanders through the house, creating interesting routes through the plan and bringing desirable qualities of light and nature to the bedrooms in the front wing that don’t offer ocean views. This is connected to different bodies of water that hold varying characteristics - natural pools, relaxation pools and social pools.
